BIBLIOTHECA ALEXANDRINA
Built in 2002 as a memorial to one of the largest and most important libraries in antiquity, Bibliotheca Alexandrina honours the Great Library of Alexandria, which was burned down in the 1st century and many of its precious books destroyed. The modern library may not be as important and rich as the previous one, yet it’s still a large library and a major cultural centre, including three museums, four art galleries, a planetarium and a laboratory where they rescue and fix old manuscripts. They also have a good section of children’s books, which can be fun to explore if you’re on holiday with your kids.
SERAPEUM OF ALEXANDRIA
Dedicated to Serapis and built by Ptolemy III, the temple of Serapeum is one of several religious centres in Alexandria. While it was mostly destroyed by the Romans in 391 CE, a few of the original pieces are left on the site such as Pompey’s Pillar, which is framed by two large sphinxes. In the past, the temple was also one of the most important annexes of the Great Library of Alexandria. The Serapeum is definitely worth a visit due to its historical importance and the beautiful location.
CORNICHE
The Corniche is a gorgeous waterfront promenade that runs along the Eastern Harbour for 16km (10mi) and ends by the Montazah Palace. The promenade offers a stunning view of the bay and Mediterranean; it’s one of the best places in the city to go for a stroll, before stopping for a karkadeh (iced hibiscus tea). PAPYRUS SCROLL
Another item of Ancient Egyptian origin – and a much-bought souvenir in Egypt – is the papyrus scroll. Papyrus was the paper used during the Ancient Egyptian era and was made from the pith of the papyrus plant. Of course, the scrolls sold nowadays are replicas; however, they’re pretty cool and look real. Papyrus scrolls differ in size and have a variety of designs printed on them, from pharaonic battle scenes to the hieroglyphic alphabet
SCARAB
Ancient Egyptians wore amulets in the shape of scarab beetles (dung beetles) as scarabs symbolised rebirth in their religion. Today, you can find representations of the insect in a huge range of sizes, colours and materials; some engraved with the hieroglyphic alphabet. Scarab bracelets and necklaces are also popular here and many visitors wear them as a reminder of their trip.
JEWELLERY
Egyptians buy large quantities of gold and silver as traditionally many feel it’s safer than putting their money in the banks. Precious metals are sold by the gram in the souqs; with jewelry, a percentage is then added to the price for the workmanship. A favorite Egypt souvenir is a cartouche with hieroglyphs.

In Egypt, you can buy various products made of camel skin such as socks, paintings, slippers, blankets, and carpets. Besides being a good souvenir the product has excellent properties.

COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS
Egypt is open for tourism and flights have resumed. Some COVID-19 restrictions to travel to Egypt are still in place. Foreigners can cross the border as long as they meet the Egypt COVID-19 entry requirements. The Egyptian government is now issuing visas. As a safety measure, overseas visitors traveling to Egypt during the pandemic must present a printed negative PCR test certificate on arrival. The test must be based on a nasal or oral swab and the certificate issued by an approved laboratory. Certificates are accepted in Arabic or English. The coronavirus test medical certificate has to be issued no more than 72 hours before the flight to Egypt. Passengers with a COVID-19 vaccination certificate stating full vaccination at least 14 days before travel are exempt from testing. Accepted vaccines are AstraZeneca, Janssen, Moderna, Pfizer. BioNTech, Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Sputnik V.

TAMIYA

Egyptians eat it with meat such as rabbit or lamb. Fatimid Sultan Hakim found the dish so unappetizing that he had it banned in the 11th century.

Egyptian desserts are quite light. Mahalabiya is a delicate rosewater-flavored ground rice dessert, topped with toasted nuts and cinnamon. Um Ali is similar to the English bread and butter pudding but is less soft and spongy as it is made with local dry bread. Roz bi laban is rice pudding, which is always served cold.
